FFFEST PANEL: Redefining Representations Of Women On Screen Presented by Glossier
Panel: Redefining Representations of Women on Screen

Moderated by Emily Yoshida, Film Critic at Vulture

In the ongoing fight to equalize gender dynamics and eliminate discrimination in our male-dominated culture, the importance of media representation cant be overstated. It is up to us as filmmakers to make responsible and thoughtful decisions about how our female characters are presented on screen. In this panel, Sarah Finn, the powerhouse casting director behind Black Panther and The Avengers franchise, Jameela Jamil, an actress, activist, and the founder of the viral I Weigh campaign, Ry Russo-Young, the director of Nobody Walks, Before I Fall, and the upcoming The Sun is Also a Star, Janet Mock, an American writer, director, TV host, and transgender rights activist, Negin Salmasi, former Pascal Pictures executive currently overseeing the US-based operations of See-Saw Films and Cleopatra Coleman, an Australian actress and writer best known for her roles in Step Up Revolution, The Last Man On Earth and the sci-fi thriller Hover in which she starred, wrote and produced. They will lead a conversation around the ways women are often portrayed, and explore methods we can use to dismantle traditional female stereotypes, and discuss new norms that empower female viewers.

Sarah Finn is a powerhouse casting director who is known for her groundbreaking work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She's responsible for casting over 100 films including Black Panther, The Avengers, and the upcoming Captain Marvel. Jameela Jamil is an actress in NBC's The Good Place and an outspoken advocate for change in the fashion and entertainment industries. She recently launched a campaign against unrealistic expectations and representations of women's bodies in the media called "I Weigh", where women are encouraged to measure their achievements and experiences rather than their pounds or kilograms. Anne Thompson is an award winning journalist who's coverage of film and television is celebrated internationally.  After thirty years of writing for publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Observer, and Wired, she joined IndieWire in 2009 where she currently acts as the Editor at Large.
